LDC as an Exemplary Centre

After returning to Nepal from the USA, where I worked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), my family and I searched for a safe and caring residential school in a home – like environment for our daughter, who has an intellectual disability. During this process, we came to know about ‘Jeevan Utthan Kendra’ – Life Development Centre (LDC), established in 2053 B.S. (1997 A.D.). At that time, such a residential care centre was rare not only in Kathmandu (the capital city), but throughout Nepal.

We first visited LDC at its previous location, before it later moved to its current location in Sankhu. From the beginning, we were impressed by the founder couple, Mr. Rajesh Manandhar and Mrs. Rekha Manandhar (Rai),whose dedication and commitment to service rather than profit gave us full confidence in entrusting our daughter to their care.

We enrolled our daughter at LDC in 2005 and she has remained there for nearly two decades. Whenever she comes home, she prefers to stay only three to four days before asking to return to LDC, eager to be with her friends and in the environment where she feels most comfortable.

We greatly appreciate LDC for its nurturing environment, effective management and services for the overall well-being of the children. While the centre faces limitations due to insufficient resources, adequate continued meaningful supports will help enhance its capacity and impact.
